The Biostrat JV advantage is our capability to incorporate high resolution
biostratigraphy with seismic, petrophysical logs and lithofacies data. The result is a far
superior geological understanding of the sedimentary basin than that provided by a less
integrated approach.
Biostrat JV sequence stratigraphers are specialized in both conventional and unconventional clastic
and carbonate plays.
Purpose and Importance
-
Interpret depositional origin
-
Predict heterogeneity in sediment accumulations
-
Define the stratigraphic extent or continuity of associated lithofacies
-
Locate onlap, toplap and downlap surfaces, and maximum flooding surfaces (MFS)
-
Recognize high stand, low stand, falling stage, transgressive and regressive systems tracts
(HST, TST, FSST, SMW & LST) due to changes in basin sea level and subsidence over time.
Integrated well log, core, seismic, and biostratigraphy data
Chronostratigraphic correlation is key in determining lateral continuity of
reservoirs and traps
Biostrat JV assists in subsurface mapping. Biostrat JV have the advantage to incorporate all data. This
includes high resolution biostratigraphy with seismic, petrophysical logs and lithofacies data. With
this data we can produce a wide range of subsurface maps such as:
- structure contour maps
- cross sections
- isopach maps,
- net sand maps
- net oil/gas sand maps.
Biostrat JV specialized services are based on core geological principles. Biostrat JV aims
to always represent geological data in its truest form.
The following rock properties noted in clastic and carbonate sediment logging aid in
understanding sedimentary basins, depositional modes and provenance:
-
Grain size, sorting and shape
analysis provide details of the energy of the depositional system
-
Bioturbation
intensity establishes primary environmental stresses and impacts on reservoir quality
-
Sand : Mud ratio
distinguishes between lithologies and identifies turbidite facies
-
Mineral identification
can provide details of the chemical environment during deposition and is useful in
provenance studies
-
Pore analysis
using point counts provide information of rock permeability and porosity to determine
reservoir, seal and trap quality
-
Oil spectrometry
for qualitative characterization of crude oil using UV light is a simple but effective
method for rapid results
-
Diagenetic studies
explain the evolution of fluid-rock interactions and associated burial models
Sedimentological log and sedimentary facies analysis for a core interval
Biostrat JV assists in geochemical exploration to locate hydrocarbon seeps which have been leaked
to the surface from subsurface reservoirs. A variety of techniques are utilized to detect and
characterize seeps. Each project design would meet the client's requirements for locating and
mapping hydrocarbon seeps to relate them to subsurface prospects. Characterization of the
petroleum types and crude oil classes is also performed.
The aim is to refine economic
evaluations before entering new plays and aid exploration companies in making lease
relinquishments.
Since our inception Biostrat JV has been offering surface geology services most notably
to clients of the southeastern Caribbean. This region is referred to as a "geologist's
graveyard" and is one of the most complex geological regions in the world. We boast a large
repository of geological map data developed by the company founder, Barry Carr-Brown and his
associates. They were involved in a pioneer group of geologists and biostratigraphers that
developed the low latitude Cenozoic planktonic zonation and created the regional geological
maps. Our specializations include developing high resolution geological maps using principles of
lithology and biofacies or a combination of both. In Trinidad and Tobago, we offer geological
field trips, outcrop logging, and sample collection for further analysis.
Groundwater is a valuable resource, the quality of which should be protected for
future generations. Biostrat JV's groundwater and mineral studies could assist in formulating water
management plans which could prevent future contamination risks. Our mineral studies are also
useful to the petroleum industry as our assessment of formation water is essential to
determining the compatibility of these fluids to enhanced oil recovery (EOR) projects.
Our range of services
includes
-
Groundwater catchment studies
-
Surface water studies
-
Hydro-geochemistry
-
Pore-water geochemistry
We offer complete testing packages for the chemistry of fresh water, ground water samples, and
spectrum chemical analysis of water, rocks, soil and other natural minerals.
Biostrat JV offers integrated petroleum geology studies inclusive of sub-surface mapping, reservoir
characterization and well-site geology services.
Biostrat JV well-site geologists provide real-time logging and correlation of well stratigraphy to
geological models of nearby wells.
Well-site geologists are equipped with microscope, UV Box and chemicals for integrated
logging while drilling (LWD).
Software integrates drilling, LWD and Gas data to provide timely solutions and make
real-time decisions to reduce nonproductive time (NPT).
